As one of the largest neurology centers in China, the department of neurology in Beijing Tiantan Hospital has become more and more popular in patients with neurological diseases.
It has been one of the national key disciplines. There are currently 92 physicians in the department who are medical doctors or masters, among whom 7 are doctoral supervisors and 13 are tutors of postgraduates.
The department provides the services for individuals with conditions such as stroke, headache, epilepsy, immune-mediated or infective neurological disorders, degenerative diseases, sleep disorders and neuromuscular problems. There are totally 210 beds in 6 wards and 1 neurological intensive care unit. Inpatients are nearly 5,000 per year, whilst outpatients in the clinics are more than 1000 per day.
Early in 2001, the first stroke unit in China was founded here. Now the Unit has been an 100-bed unit for acute and rehabilitating patients with stroke. With professional doctors and nurses in the stroke unit team, the unit provides not only the treatment of stroke medicine, but also the treatment of physiotherapy, psychotherapy, speech and language therapy and swallow therapy. Stroke patients in stroke unit have lower mortality and disability, also shorter time in hospital and less cost. The NICU is fully equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring, mechanical ventilation and related intensive care support systems to provide comprehensive patient care in a critical care setting.
The members in the department team are active in clinical trial research and have participated in the “Eleventh Five-Years” national research programs from 2006 under the Professor Yongjun Wang. Every year many papers are published in China or abroad. In 2011, the program about cerebrovascular disease designed by the department has already been funded for 1.2 million RMB in “Twelfth Five-Years” national research plans. This program will combine multidisciplinary resources and set up the research network of cerebrovascular disease thus to promote the development of neurology.
