Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, founded in 1956, is a leading comprehensive hospital with a focus on clinical neuroscience. It is a top-tier, Class A tertiary hospital that serves as the China National Clinical Research Center for Neurological Diseases, the National Center for Medical Quality Control of Neurological Diseases, the National Center for Neurological Disorders (Beijing), and the National Medical Center (Guidance). It is also home to the Beijing Neurosurgical Institute, the National Collaboration Center for Neurological Disorders Prevention, and the National Office for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Control. The hospital plays an essential role in national healthcare reform initiatives, including being a pilot for the high-quality development of public hospitals, the establishment of modern hospital management systems, medical innovation, and the development of research-oriented inpatient wards. The hospital has maintained an A+ or higher rating in the National Health Commission's tertiary hospital evaluations for five consecutive years.
As one of the earliest public general hospitals established after the founding of the People's Republic of China, Beijing Tiantan Hospital has always upheld the fundamental purpose of serving the people with dedication to health, forming a hospital spirit of "noble medical ethics, persistent excellence, rigorousness and practicality, diligence and honesty" as well as a core value of "devotion, sacrifice, courage to challenge, bold innovation, and life above all."
The hospital covers an area of 181,581 square meters with a total building area of 352,294 square meters. It follows the principles of “patient-centered” and “specialized expertise with comprehensive service” in its functional positioning, with an organization that includes 67 clinical departments and 1,650 beds. A major part of the hospital's service innovation is the promotion of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) model, with 55 MDT outpatient services that significantly enhance the diagnosis and treatment of complex and rare diseases, achieving the model of 'doctors revolving around patients' to reduce the need for patients to run errands. Since moving to its new location in the Fengtai District in 2018, the hospital has served over 2.1 million outpatient and emergency patients annually.
The hospital is committed to the strategic goal of 'establishing a national strategic powerhouse in clinical neuroscience.' It has proposed an innovative disciplinary concept of 'Clinical Neuroscience + X,' and has actively built a classification system for discipline development, which includes 'key disciplines, advantageous disciplines, specialty disciplines, and basic disciplines.' This system promotes the distinctive, innovative, and healthy development of disciplines and their directions throughout the hospital. While striving to build a 'national team' in clinical neuroscience, the hospital continues to enhance the overall development level of its disciplines. Currently, the hospital houses three national key disciplines recognized by the Ministry of Education, eight national clinical key specialties, and six Beijing clinical key specialties. Among them, neurosurgery and neurology, both national key disciplines and clinical specialties, have consistently ranked at the top of national academic rankings for many years. Driven by the development of clinical neuroscience, disciplines such as imaging, intensive care, molecular pathology, clinical nursing, and neuro-oncology have experienced rapid growth, forming a distinctive and world-class discipline cluster.
The hospital focuses on both high-quality clinical research that changes treatment guidelines and cutting-edge basic research that reshapes theories. It leads the charge in scientific innovation, tackling critical health issues and advancing key technologies. Areas such as cerebrovascular diseases, brain tumors, and neuroinfections have achieved international recognition. Clinical research has consistently been at the forefront of China, with some studies setting new international standards in ischemic cerebrovascular disease and glioma. In the past five years, the hospital has won one First-Class National Science and Technology Progress Award, two Second-Class Awards, ten other significant provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards and 30 social forces awards. Key research results have been published in top academic journals like Nature, Science, Cell, NEJM, The Lancet, JAMA, and BMJ. These groundbreaking contributions have helped amplify the 'Voice of China' and the 'Voice of Tiantan' on the global stage of clinical neuroscience.
Over the years, the hospital has simultaneously implemented the strategies of 'building nests to attract phoenixes' and 'attracting phoenixes to build nests,' effectively harnessing the talent aggregation effect. It places a strong emphasis on the cultivation of leading talent, discipline heads, and team development, with a particular focus on nurturing young talents. Currently, the hospital is home to two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one Yangtze River Scholar, one Young Yangtze River Scholar, six Beijing Scholars, five Young Beijing Scholars, two recipients of the National Thousand Talents Program, eight strategic science and technology talents of Beijing, one recipient of the National Natural Science Foundation's Distinguished Young Scholars award, three recipients of the Excellent Young Scholars award, 18 experts who receive the Special Government Allowances of the State Council, one National Overseas Talent, and ten Beijing Overseas Talents.
As the clinical teaching hospital of Capital Medical University, Beijing Tiantan Hospital is committed to the principle of “cultivating virtue and fostering talent” in education. It has established thirteen national training bases for standardized residency programs, four specialized residency training centers, and offers clinical teaching for eight undergraduate programs. The hospital is also home to one national-level postgraduate course, one first-class national undergraduate course, and has been approved as a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. The hospital is authorized to offer doctoral and master’s degree programs in 18 and 30 disciplines respectively, with 247 graduate supervisors, including 132 doctoral supervisors (of which 11 are young doctoral advisors).
For many years, the hospital has actively shouldered its social responsibilities, successfully carried out medical aid tasks such as combating the COVID-19 pandemic, disaster relief, and providing assistance to Xinjiang and Tibet. The hospital has been awarded numerous honors, including National Civilized Unit, National Advanced Primary Party Organization, and National Advanced Collective in Foreign Medical Aid. Several outstanding individuals have emerged, including National Advanced Workers, recipients of the National May 1st Labor Medal, and exemplary medical workers like those modeled after Wang Zhongcheng, representing industry leaders.
Exploration brings hope, and innovation shapes the future. Currently, the hospital has embarked on its third transformation, shifting from 'leading with neurosurgery and characterized by a neuroscience cluster' to 'building a national strategic powerhouse in clinical neuroscience.' It is evolving from 'strong specialties, broad comprehensiveness' to 'strong specialties, strong sub-specialties, strong comprehensiveness,' and from a medical center to an internationally renowned medical center. This transformation is driving the hospital’s high-quality development. In the future, under the leadership of the Party Committee, all hospital staff and leaders will be guided by Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. The hospital will fully implement President Xi's important directives on health and wellness, as well as the Four Orientations in technological innovation. Focusing on the health of the people, with an emphasis on meeting the needs of public health and disease prevention in China, the hospital will uphold and promote the noble spirit of 'respect for life, saving lives and healing the wounded, dedication, and boundless love.' The hospital will continue to implement its comprehensive blueprint, which includes 'two centers and two institutes, four hospitals and one alliance, and six supporting platforms,' ensuring steady progress in transformation and high-quality development. The ultimate goal is to build a 'national strategic force in clinical neuroscience' and establish an internationally leading research and innovation hospital, stepping forward to take the center stage in the world of life and health sciences.
