Department of Urology Surgery

Founded in 1976, the Department of Urology Surgery of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, has developed into an excellent department with distinctive features integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, and prevention through the continuous efforts of several generations, and won the "Most Improved Department Award" of the hospital from 2011 to 2014. In 2015, it became the research sub-center of neuro-urology and andrology of the National Neurological Disorder Medical Research Center. In 2018, it was awarded the title of “Key medical specialty” by the Beijing Municipal Hospital Authority, and the Department of Urology Surgery is the Green Laser Training Center of the Department of Urology Surgery of Capital Medical University and the Rapid Rehabilitation Center of Beijing Tiantan Hospital of Capital Medical University. In 2019, it was awarded the “Summit” program of Beijing medical administration center. And in 2023, the center was awarded the “Belt and Road” uroscopy training center of the National Health Commission.

The Department of Urology Surgery has one doctoral supervisor, one professor, two associate professors, one chief physician, seven deputy chief physicians, three attending physician, and one resident physicians. The department has a 3D laparoscope, high-definition laparoscope, ureteral electronic flexible mirror, ureteral fiber flexible mirror, percutaneous nephroscope, electrodesiccoscope, cystoscope, urodynamic checker, extracorporeal lithotripter, EMS ultrasonic lithotripter, holmium laser and green laser and other equipment. The team can perform laparoscopic radical total cystectomy with controlled ileal cystectomy, laparoscopic radical prostate cancer surgery, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for kidney cancer, laparoscopic surgery for complex pheochromocytoma, laparoscopic adrenal gland tumor resection, laparoscopic partial bladder resection, transurethral green laser vaporization electrosurgery for prostate, bladder tumor electrosurgery, ureteroscopic lithotripsy, etc. Minimally invasive surgery, prostate cancer particle implantation, sacral electrical nerve stimulator implantation, and other surgeries. Currently, the team is undertaking scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Beijing Natural Science Foundation, and China-Austria International Cooperation Project, as well as teaching tasks such as the national level and Beijing Municipal Continuing Education Program. Ranking top 100 based on Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences for many times.

The disciplinary features of the Department of Urology Surgery include

1. Neuro-urological surgery: awarded the title of "Key Medical Specialties" by Beijing Municipal Medical Bureau, a combination of urology, neurosurgery, and neurology specialists to solve the dysfunction of the urinary system due to abnormal function of the nervous system. The department routinely carries out dynamic urodynamic, imaging urodynamic, and pelvic floor neurophysiological examinations by the operating procedures of the International Urological Control Association. It has examined thousands of patients from all over China. The technology of perinephric nerve sheath tumor removal in cooperation with neurosurgery is advanced in China.

2. Basic and clinical research of prostate disease diagnosis and treatment: The Department of Urology Surgery cooperates with famous experts from the United States and Austria; collaborates with the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Capital Medical University and other tertiary hospitals to carry out joint research, which is unique for the comprehensive treatment of prostate disease.

3. Postoperative Rapid Recovery Center: Following the international advanced medical concept,  the team reduces the surgical stress reaction, reduces the postoperative organ dysfunction of patients, and shortens postoperative recovery time through multi-modal medical methods such as shortening the preoperative fasting and drinking time, early postoperative eating (within 6 hours after surgery) and early bed activity (2 hours after surgery).
