Department of Epilepsy
Department of Epilepsy
The Department of Epilepsy was established based on the Epilepsy Specialty Group of the Department of Neurology with the Epilepsy Surgery Department. Together two groups form the Epilepsy Center of Beijing Tiantan Hospital. It is the location of the Beijing Epilepsy Difficult Disease Consultation Center, a component of the National Clinical Research Center for Neurological Diseases, and the EEG training base of the Chinese Anti-Epilepsy Association.
The Department of Epilepsy of the Neurology Center has thirteen epilepsy specialists, including Qun Wang, Xiaoqiu Shao, Zhimei Li, Maomao Liu, Tao Cui, Ruijuan Lv, Weixiong Shi, Chao Chen, Chengyu Li, Fei Zhu, Jiechuan Ren, Guoping Ren, Lianping Xu, and two clinical neurophysiologists, Jing Wang and Li Guo. Among them are three chief physicians, five deputy chief physicians, five attending physicians, two resident physicians, and one assistant researcher. In addition, there are ten doctoral degree holders and three master's degree holders. The Department of Epilepsy is a doctoral and master's training site of the Department of Neurology of Capital Medical University, with one doctoral supervisor and two master's supervisors. It undertakes the teaching of doctoral and master's degree students in neurology and medical students of 5-year and 7-year medical programs of the medical faculty, as well as advanced physicians in neurology and epilepsy, and electroencephalography nationwide.
The Epilepsy Clinic includes epilepsy genetics, co-morbidities, rational drug use, neuromodulation, and preoperative evaluation clinics. The main specialties are epilepsy and other seizure disorders such as seizure convulsions, sensory abnormalities, fainting, syncope, short-term loss of consciousness, involuntary movements, mental abnormalities, and sleep disorders.
Based on standardized medical diagnosis and treatment, the epilepsy ward will carry out a ketogenic diet treatment program for clinically refractory epilepsy based on regular antiepileptic drug treatment with the expert group composed of pediatrics and clinical nutrition; and implement a surgical treatment program with the talented group consisting of functional neurosurgery for a comprehensive assessment to improve the control rate of clinical seizures further and improve the quality of life of patients. In addition, the neuromodulation treatment room can carry out transcranial magnetism, transcranial electrical stimulation, and ear vagus nerve stimulation for drug-tolerant epilepsy.
The main instruments and equipment in the epilepsy department are
General EEG recorder: 4 units in outpatient EEG room, 1 unit in special needs EEG room, 2 units in the international medical department
Video EEG recorder: 12 units in the epilepsy monitoring unit
Sleep monitoring recorder: 3 units of sleep monitoring unit
Magnetoencephalography: 1 unit in the magnetoencephalography room
Transcranial magnetic and electrical stimulation therapeutic apparatus: 1 unit each in the neuromodulation therapy room.
In addition, the neuroimaging center is equipped with high-field strength MRI. It can carry out MRI, MRA, MRS, fMRI, fcMRI, and other examinations. Furthermore, the nuclear medicine department is equipped with advanced PET-CT, SPECT, and other advanced neurological functional imaging and fusion image diagnostic equipment, which will provide advanced and scientific means for the preoperative evaluation of surgical treatment of intractable epilepsy.
