Since the department was established in 1984, it has become a discipline with strong comprehensive strength integrating medicine, teaching and research. The department consists of outpatient department, wards with 65 beds, operating rooms, day surgery unit, remote consultation platform and laboratories. The department is supported by National Clinical Key Specialty - Construction Project. The department is the advanced training base for spinal microsurgery of the National Health Commission Capacity Building and Continuing Education Center, the first ERAS pilot unit for orthopaedic of the National Health Commission, the core unit and the first batch of member units of "science popularization project" of the National Clinical Research Center for Orthopaedic, Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, clinical experimental base of National Medical Products Administration, the first IGASS Global Spine Specialist Training Center in China, the base for standardized residency training basement in Beijing, Beijing Fengtai District Clinical Key Specialty. It also has the first batch of Beijing Hospital Authority well-known expert team, PI Research Team of Laboratory of China National Clinical Research Center for Neurological Diseases and Beijing Key Laboratory of Fundamental Research on Biomechanics in Clinical Application. It was approved to award orthopaedic doctoral degree firstly in Capital Medical University, and to establish postdoctoral mobile station. This comprehensive discipline integrates subspecialties such as spine surgery, trauma orthopaedic, joint surgery, bone and soft tissue tumors, sports medicine & rehabilitation, wound and soft tissue repair, and osteoporosis.
Prof. Baoge Liu, the head of department, is a nationally renowned spine surgery expert, serving as a member of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, standing committee member of the Spine Society of Europe (EUROSPINE), member of the International Group for Advancement in Spinal Science (IGASS), national committee member of Chinese Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (CAOS), vice chairman of Beijing Orthopaedic Association (BOA), and members of editorial-board of top academic journals such as European Spine Journal, et al.. There are 22 doctors, including 1 postdoctoral supervisor, 1 doctoral supervisor, 4 master's supervisors. 15 doctors have senior professional titles, and 86% of those with master or doctoral degree (64% with doctoral degree, 4 of them have postdoctoral experience). The staff serve in many social and academic groups such as COA, CAOS, BOA.
More than 30 projects, including international cooperation projects, national and Beijing research projects were undertaken. The researches focus on cervical spine, with more than 10 articles were published by internationally renowned journals such as Clin Orthop Relat Res, Spine J, J Neurosurg Spine, Spine, Eur Spine J. We formulated collective standards for electronic medical record data of cervical spondylosis. Prof. Liu is the editor-in-chief of the postgraduate textbook "Orthopaedic". A system of accurate assessment, technological innovation, transformation and promotion for high-quality diagnosis and treatment for complex cervical spine diseases has been established. New original osteotomy procedures for cervical deformity were innovated, special surgical instruments were invented and developed, 6 patents were obtained, and scientific and technological achievements were commercialized. The second prize of the Beijing Medical Science and Technology Progress Award, the third prize of the Huaxia Medical Award, and the second prize of the Capital Medical University Science and Technology Award were promulgated. The department was rated on the top of Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) in Beijing.
The department has the advantage of international communications and cooperations with international professional academic groups. Tiantan International Spine Forum (TISF) was held with great academic influence since 2012.
The department undertakes the education of undergraduate, postgraduate students and the continuing education of residents and advanced training physicians. 2 postdoctoral fellows, 15 doctoral graduates and 29 master graduates have been recruited. 7 national continuing education projects and more than ten workshops such as cervical spine deformity and microscope technology in spine were held which covered more than 220 students across the country, including 20 advanced doctors, and 51 specialized technical backbones for primary hospital. Capital Medical University teaching award were prized for 2 times and the outstanding director of teaching and research department of Beijing Tiantan Hospital was prized for Prof. Liu. 10 teaching projects were undertaken and the staff were prized excellent teachers of the hospital more than 10 times and of the university for 2 times. The textbook "Orthopaedic" for the “14th Five-Year Plan” for higher education was edited.
