Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, was founded in 1956 and is a large international comprehensive hospital with neurosurgery as its pioneer and neuroscience cluster as its characteristic medical, teaching, research, and prevention. Beijing Tiantan Hospital has moved to a new location in the Huaxiang area on the South Fourth Ring Road. The new hospital covers an area four times larger than the old one. The number of beds has increased from 1,150 to 1,650. The hospital will be a regional medical center and a national center for clinical neuroscience research and innovation.

The new hospital's commissioning has brought unprecedented opportunities for multidisciplinary development based on the surgical platform. After moving to the new hospital, the hospital has focused on strengthening the creation and construction of non-neurosurgical surgical departments to maintain the leading level of neurosurgery while further enhancing the comprehensive strength of Beijing Tiantan Hospital. The number of beds in surgical departments such as macrovascular and cardiac surgery, general surgery, thoracic surgery, orthopedics, gynecology, etc. has increased significantly while undergoing professional reorganization. Non-neurosurgical procedures have exceeded two-thirds of the total number of operations in the hospital, and the annual number of anesthesia operations is expected to exceed 40,000 cases.

The Department of Anesthesiology of the new Beijing Tiantan Hospital has a total of 82 work sites, including 46 central operating rooms (2 hybrid operating rooms and 2 MRI operating rooms), 5 operating rooms in International Medical Service, 8 neurointerventional operating rooms, 18 day surgery treatment centers, 17 day ward beds, 45 PACU beds, and anesthesia evaluation clinics.

The department has 82 anesthesiologists, 8 clinical nurses and 10 anesthesia support staff. Among them, there are 10 chief physicians, 28 deputy chief physicians, 31 doctoral degree holders and 25 master's degree holders. There are 4 doctoral mentors and 7 master's mentors. It is the standardized training base for residents in Beijing and the neurosurgical anesthesia training center of the Chinese Medical Association Anesthesiology Branch. And also, the only member of International council on perioperative neuroscience training in Asia.

In 2022, we completed nearly 34,000 surgeries, including 16,000 cases of neurosurgical anesthesia, more than 9,000 cases of neuro-interventional anesthesia, and more than 18,000 cases of general surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, orthopedics, urology, thoracic surgery, cardiac macrovascular surgery, ear, nose and throat, and ophthalmology. In addition, the Department of Anesthesiology routinely carries out postoperative analgesia for neurosurgery, labor analgesia, painless abortion, painless gastroenterology, painless tracheoscopy and other programs, providing patients with a full range of professional perioperative services.

The Department of Anesthesiology of Beijing Tiantan Hospital has undertaken dozens of basic and clinical research projects in related fields and made much progress and achievements in the specialty. The team is the first Chinese team to apply the intraoperative awake technique to tumor resection in the functional brain area and has successfully implemented nearly 10,000 cases of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring and nearly 10,000 cases of neuro-interventional anesthesia management, which benefited socially and economically. In addition, the team has rich experience and cutting-edge exploration in neurosurgical anesthesia for cerebrovascular disease, brain trauma, skull base tumor, spinal cord tumor and other neurosurgical procedures, and have established a distinctive Beijing Tiantan brand in this field. In terms of continuing education and training, the Department of Anesthesiology of Beijing Tiantan Hospital has been recruiting more and more specialized training physicians and trainees from all over the country every year, with the main goal of strengthening neurosurgical anesthesia techniques and comprehensive training and cultivation of anesthesia techniques. The Department of Anesthesiology of Beijing Tiantan Hospital is one of the first batches of standardized training bases for specialist physicians in Beijing and the training base of neurosurgical anesthesia of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. With the basic training framework of clinical anesthesia, especially neurosurgical anesthesia, critical care monitoring and treatment, and pain management, the department has established a complete training system with the help of its strong faculty and rich clinical resources.

Since 2009, the department has held the "Beijing Tiantan International Neuroscience and Anesthesia Forum," "Advanced Neurosurgical Anesthesia Course," "Beijing Tiantan Inhalation Anesthesia Course," "Beijing Tiantan Intravenous Anesthesia Courses," "Clinical Research Methods Course" and other large continuing education programs, providing the best platform for the exchange of experience and sharing of results for researchers in neurosurgical anesthesia and related fields nationally and internationally.
