Department of Neuromuscular Disease
The Department of Neuromuscular Disease is affiliated with the Neurology Center of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University. The department is a national key specialty, with peripheral neuropathy, muscular disease, cerebral leukodystrophy, and genetic neurological diseases as its primary diagnosis and research direction. It comprises a team of specialized physicians and nursing professionals engaged in neuromuscular diseases. Professors Zaiqiang Zhang and Hua Pan preside over the work, and there are three chief physicians and four deputy chief physicians. In addition, the neuromuscular specialty clinic, specialist clinic, special needs clinic and specialty ward are opened to provide advanced and effective diagnosis and treatment services for patients.
The department comprises the neuromuscular disease specialty group, the neuromuscular electrophysiology specialty group, and the neuroprosthetic specialty group. The leading, supporting laboratories and institutions include
· neuromuscular electrophysiology examination room,
· neuromuscular pathology laboratory,
· molecular genetic disease diagnosis laboratory of the National Clinical Research Center for Neurological Diseases,
· ultrastructural research laboratory of the Institute of Neurosurgery,
· neuro electrophysiology research laboratory, and
· nerve injury repair center.
National key special projects and significant projects of capital city specialties support scientific research projects.
Scope of treatments: The Department of Neuromuscular Diseases treats peripheral neuropathies of various etiologies, neuropathic pain, motor neuron disease, myotonic dystrophy, various muscle diseases, muscle ion channel diseases, and rare and complex diseases of the nervous system such as adult cerebral leukomalacia, mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, hereditary spastic paraplegia, hereditary ataxia, and hereditary peripheral neuropathy. The team also collaborates with neurosurgery to perform the functional repair of peripheral nerve injuries such as the poor recovery of facial nerve palsy, facial muscle spasm, intractable trigeminal neuralgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, and elbow tunnel syndrome.
