Functional Neurosurgery Ward
Functional Neurosurgery Ward
The founding of the functional neurosurgical ward in Beijing Tiantan Hospital, affiliated to Capital Medical University, can be traced back to the 1950s, when academician Wang Zhongcheng pioneered pallidotomy by manual puncture, pioneering the surgical treatment of Parkinson's disease in China. Later, functional neurosurgery was inherited and developed by famous neurosurgical experts such as Professor Chen Binghuan, Professor Yang Jiongda, and Professor Luan Guoming. Now, under the leadership of Director Professor Zhang Jianguo, the discipline has made further progress in researching on movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease, dystonia and drug-refractory epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and cranial nerve diseases.
Team building:
It has 3 chief physicians, 3 doctoral supervisors, and 3 associate chief physicians; Currently, there is one “Beijing Outstanding Expert” and“Beijing Scholar” in the department, one winner of the Wang Zhongcheng Neurosurgical Academic Achievement Award, and one winner of the Wang Zhongcheng Neurosurgical Physician Annual Award. The team was selected into the "Dengfeng" talent training plan of the Beijing Municipal Hospital Administration in 2015, and was selected into the “Innovative Team in the key areas of the Innovative Talent Promotion Plan” in 2016. In 2017, the team was selected for the “Innovative Team of the Ministry of Science and Technology” in cooperation with Tsinghua University. Currently, there are 2 postdoctoral students, 5 doctoral students, and 14 master students.
Construction of discipline platform:
Functional Neurosurgery is the clinical diagnosis and treatment and research center of movement disorders in Capital Medical University. The research platform includes the Functional Neurological Disease Laboratory in Beijing Neurosurgical Institute, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Neuroelectric Stimulation Research and Treatment, the National Engineering Research Laboratory of Clinical Neuromodulation Device Implantation Center, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Clinical Medicine of Epilepsy, and the chairman unit of the China Neuromodulation Alliance.
Clinical work:
In 1998, it was the first to carry out deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery in China to treat Parkinson's disease and achieved success. So far, it has completed nearly 4, 000 cases of DBS surgery, achieving good therapeutic results and reaching the world's advanced level. It has become the world's largest DBS implantation center. In July 2003, we innovatively treated various brain functional diseases by DBS, and for the first time treated delayed dystonia by STN-DBS. This was reported by CCTV News and considered an important breakthrough in the field. We have taken part in research and pioneered the application of domestic DBS devices in China, established cooperative relationships with multiple functional neurological and neurosurgical centers at home and abroad, and established the first national-level multidisciplinary standardized diagnosis and treatment and research platform for neuromodulation.
Scientific research achievements:
1. Scientific research topics:
At present, the main topics are around the basic and clinical research of brain functional diseases. More than 30 projects have been awarded and are under research. Among them, we have undertaken and completed a number of national-level scientific research projects in the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Five-Year Plans, among which the 13th and 14th Five-Year Plans are national key research and development projects. At present, the research funds amount to more than 40 million yuan, and more than 200 SCI papers have been published. Authorized more than 10 patents.

The department leader, Professor Zhang Jianguo, is an expert who enjoys the special government allowance and is a "hundred" level talent in the"Ten, Hundred, and Thousand Talents" project in Beijing. He has won many awards, including "Beijing Science and Technology Rising Star", "Beijing Outstanding Contribution to Science, Technology and Management Talent", "high-level discipline leader" and "peak climbing" talent plan of Beijing Health System, the 21st "Wu Jieping-Paul Janssen Award", "Wang Zhongcheng Neurosurgery Academic Achievement Award", and the 4th"National Famous Doctor-Outstanding Achievement Award".
Translational medicine:
Since 2003, the team has been collaborating with Tsinghua University to develop domestic brain pacemakers and vagus nerve stimulators, and has been responsible for making the animal experiments, clinical trials, product optimization, and clinical promotion of the project. We have received multiple funding from the National Science and Technology Support Program during the"11th Five-Year Plan", "12th Five-Year Plan", and"13th Five-Year Plan", as well as key projects from the National Natural Science Foundation. It has been selected as one of the six major scientific and technological achievements in Beijing and has been rated as one of the top ten scientific and technological advances in universities by the Ministry of Education. The sixth scientific and technological achievement of the "Decade of Science and Technology", was listed as one of the "outstanding representative achievements in the field of medical and health research" by the National Health and Family Planning Commission in 2015. The project was reported as a typical successful case at the 2016 Beijing Municipal Hospital Scientific and Technological Achievements Transformation Conference and was highly praised by the leaders of Beijing and the Hospital Authority. In 2017, it was selected as an innovative team by the Ministry of Science and Technology in cooperation with Tsinghua University, and Tiantan Hospital was awarded the "Technology Contract Registration Office". The "Tsinghua-Tiantan Neuroscience Platform" project received the first batch of special support from Beijing's "Brain Science Research" program. The project “key technology, system and clinical application of brain pacemaker ”won the first prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2018, which made China the second country in the world to master the technology of brain pacemakers.
