The brief introduction of Beijing Neurosurgical Institute
Beijing Neurosurgical Institute was founded in March 1960, as the earliest non-profit neurosurgical research institute in China, it is managed by director Prof. Zhang Yazhuo and vice director Prof. Jiang Tao. The Institute has 182 staff members and consists of 5 administrative departments, 14 basic medical research laboratories, 6 clinical research laboratories, 1 office for disease control and prevention and 2 social associations.
Led by the first director Prof. Zhao Yicheng and the second director Prof. Wang Zhongcheng, the Institute has made great development in research, teaching and clinical practice and has developed to be the largest in Asia and enjoyed a good reputation around the world in the field of neurosurgical research. Many famous organizations have been established within the Institute, including “Center for Neuroscience Research and Training of WHO”, “Beijing College of Neurosurgery”, “Training Base of Neuroendoscopy & Minimally Invasive Techniques by Ministry of Health(Currently National Health and Family Planning Commission) of People’s Republic of China”, “Beijing Key Laboratory of Brain Tumor”, “Beijing Key Laboratory of Central Nervous System Injury and Repair”, “Beijing Key Laboratory of Electrical Nerve Stimulation Research and Therapy”, “Beijing International Scientific Collaboration Base of Brain Tumor”, and “Beijing International Collaboration and Clinical Trial Platform of Brain Tumor”.
Beijing Neurosurgery Institute has been adhering to the transformation of medical research as the main line and guided by the major clinical demands, as well as in close connection with the needs of the municipal government and the people in the capital, Beijing Neurosurgical Institute has conducted systematic research in the field of the basic and clinical problems regarding serious and difficulty neurosurgical diseases, created new theories, developed new technology and established new methods. Based on Tiantan Hospital as the clinical base, the Institute has achieved extraordinary successes in respect of the research and development, transformation and promotion of the diagnostic and treatment application technology regarding brain tumor, trauma, cerebrovascular, spinal diseases and functional neurosurgery, some of which even rank the world advanced level. The Institute has undertaken a total of 467 projects, and acquired 291 scientific achievements, among which there are 27 at state level and 4 at international level. In 2009, Academician Wang Zhongcheng was presented the highest national scientific reward “State Supreme Science and Technology Award” and an asteroid was named after him in 2012.
Standing on an international frontier, the ultimate goal of Beijing Neurosurgical Institute is to translate and apply the new research and clinical concepts, techniques and methods to the neurosurgical healthcare practice, based on the basic and clinical matters of the major disease of brain. The Institute is always committed to raising the level of the basic and clinical practice of neurosurgery in China.
